Futures
(Thompson)

Futures is located in Thompson. It is sponsored by Marymound North, an agency that provides a safe place and other services to at-risk children and youth in the Thompson area. The project is a collaboration of Marymound North, the School District of Mystery Lake and Burntwood Regional Health Authority.

Futures serves youth and young adults in Thompson and surrounding area who are at risk of becoming pregnant, those who are pregnant and those who are parenting children age 0-6. Futures was developed through a partnership of community service providers as a way to respond to specific needs of young parents and youth at risk of becoming pregnant in the community - needs such as counselling, educational supports, and financial support services. Futures opened in August 1994. /font>

The project aims to improve the health and well-being of its priority groups by providing resources, support and services that can enhance their lives. Futures reaches out to participants during a time when life is full of challenges and barriers to success. The project is dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential and in turn provide a solid and healthy start for their children.

Futures is a community based, voluntary program emphasizing participant-driven service. Service requests range from prenatal support and parenting skills to transition housing, relocation and family budgeting. Collaboration among service providers is a defining feature of the Futures programming approach, and the project also has a strong focus on education, both for priority groups and the broader community.

"Since coming to Futures I now do everything on my own, I am more outgoing and I have built up my self-esteem to be able to ask if I need help and not allow people to walk all over me." Mother of two, who recently gained employment
