The CFRC serves families with children age
0-6 and youth who are pregnant or at risk of becoming pregnant
in Cranberry Portage and surrounding area. The community is
home to Frontier Collegiate Institute, a residential school
serving 22 outlying communities, and has one of the highest
teen pregnancy rates in the province. The CFRC was developed
by the Children's Development Centre (a children's programs
provider in Cranberry Portage), with assistance from Greenstone
Community Futures Development Corporation in Flin Flon, to
fill the gap in services for young parents, single parents
and their children (especially Aboriginal families) in Cranberry
Portage. The CFRC opened its doors in February 1995.
The CFRC follows the family resource centre
model of service delivery. Under this model, the CFRC works
to provide a wide range of services accessible to all family
members. The project began with a strong focus on programs
involving direct interaction with children, such as child/parent
play groups. Over the years, the CFRC has been a dynamic organization,
evolving and expanding in efforts to develop an integrated
network of programs to address the needs of young children
in the community. The CFRC approach emphasizes multi-sectoral
cooperation, flexibility, a participant-centered approach,
and a focus on training and education.
